J*andeOne said: IMO there's likely a logical reason for these "bur's" (eg. something along the lines of what Wolf stated), otherwise you got the one bad factory spool out of a thousand. As for 40 lb. test mainline, complete overkill. If you remove the first 30 feet of line every so often, you should have no problems, I never have in over twenty years. Not to mention the extra drag from 40 lb diameter line, good luck getting your gear in the mud (on the Banks) 180 feet down.

*lley cat said: I run 30 lb main line and only use the heavier lines as leaders to impart action to the lure being used. Is it not true that the test strength you see on the package is only 1/3 of the true breaking strength ? I believe that the real breaking strength for 30 lb test is holding a suspended 90lb weight for a period of some time and can't rmember what the weights and measures people said it was, or was it CSA ? Anyway thats my two bits worth. AL

I remember testing this when I was younger (really young, 12 or so), so I can't remember exactly how I tested it but I remember everything breaking before it reached the claimed strength. Try hanging two cannonballs off 30lb test and feel how tight the line is; I would put money on it breaking when you try to add that third ball. Thanks Captain Dudds

R*d Monster said: Rico (et al): Are we talking about poor line or poor fishing technique? If you don't know how to fish, go to Safeway.
...or use downrigger line on your reel.
I use 30# test on both mainlines and the leaders. I get one big spool of the good stuff (Maxima), and use it for almost everything: that way I'm certain about what strength line is on what: everything is 30. Personally, this has worked great, but I may move to 40# on leaders for the really big fish with really big sharp teeth. Have you ever retrieved your line to find a leader with nothing on the end?
Last season I did have one problem when I passed the rod to my dad. He brought a very big spring (30+ and his biggest to date is half that) right to the boat. About three feet away from my waiting net, the lunker gave one last gasp and went striaght down. But while my dad's eye's grew wider at the sight of the approaching fish, his grip on the reel reached maximum strength. Well, so much for that fish.
Wam! The rod smacked the gunnel and the fish was gone.
I'm sure this sort of thing happens all the time with guides, but I don't think there's a moral to the story. Heavier line? Maybe. Are you going to get heavier rods too? In the fall it's not uncommon for guys in passing boats to show me their broken rods when I ask how the fishing is going. Maybe they use heavy line and bring extra rods?
For the record, my dad's unceremonious catch and release was accomplished with a broken leader, not a broken rod. And he did manage to catch a teenager a short while later. :)
FS: Get a life.
Remember, it's called "fishing," not "catching."

Interesting to see all the opinions over line test strength, but personally i have always used 25 lb and this was the only time i have ever broken off. (unintentionally) i have had leaders broken, but not the main line. scotty

*aglemaniac said: I used to use Trilene Big Game 25lb. For main and leaders. I like to fish plugs and felt the 25lb. gave my plugs a little more action. But between the seals and the fact that I have to fish down to 180ft.in the Kitty Coleman area. I have bumped it up to 30lb Big Game for both. I can see how a heavier leader 40 etc. would help with hootchies. But wonder if a lighter leader would benefit spoons. Haven't fished spoons much, but it seems to be making quite the resurgance in the last five years or so. I must say I'm a little dissapointed with the quality of the coyotes in general. But they sure seem to catch a lot of fish. Eman Edited by - Eagle Maniac on 03/14/2006 13:43:14

Often, i also only had one hook left on the line, the trailer hook was cut off. I have to say, that I am not all that good about checking the leaders often and retyimg new ones. Especially if i have a hot hoochy on and the fish are biting... But these problems went away when i switch to 40# leaders.

k*lly said: Still dont see the problem with some guys using 40lb main. When 25lb gets knicks in it(which is near impossible not to) its going to be weak. Although most can get away with 20-25lb test why not just go a bit heavier to avoid that problem? . With that being said its pretty hard to break a fish off on 30lb if you let it run. Dont guides in the charlottes only use 25lb?

R*el Deal said: Well were all waiting to really get out there and do our thing and passing time with threads as this until the real season starts ----- however Wolf as you know I fish offshore and will not jump into the forum unless I am able to contribute ( being a Tuna,Shark & Broadbill Hunter). Firstly there are only 5 mono line extruders in the world as per my information for example ( Ande Florida CO), (Maxima Calif Co) and (Tripplefish Florida Co ) are all extruded in the same factory in Germany with actual product differences in marketing not product - but price when all is said and done! Berkley Trilene and members of the corporate are manufactured in the USA with other extruders in South America, Australia and Japan. I guess what Im attempting to share is that the least expensive two items in fishing are line & hooks. Line if not managed properly will bite you in the ass and your fish is gone! A slight nick, reeling up from your downrigger or mooching for the big guys and you have some kelp wrapped around your line ---- that is going to be your weak link! The next time it happens run your line which had the kelp wrapped around over your lips (sounds insane) however you will feel slight cuts in the mono. There is a saying that 10% of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish and this is due to the devil in the details. Confidence has a significant impact in what you run with line selection but its the maintenance of the line where the results are. Fore those of you who experience unexplainable cut-offs whether its be between the first and second hook or possible you only have 1 foot left of your leader ---- there are devils that follow the spawning runs in wolf packs ( ask any commercial troller) and they are known to follow into fresh water ---- just start googling. But stay on top of (LINE)maintenance Thats my 2 Cs!
